René Girard - 260.58 Performance Pts
Born: 04/04/1954 Vauvert, France
Position: Midfielder Height: 1.78m Weight: 72kg
After 8
seasons, and over 200 games with his first club, Nimes, Girard joined Bordeaux
in 1980. Perfect timing as it turned out; 3 Ligue Un titles and 2 French Cups
were won during the decade. The 1984 league title, Bordeaux's first since 1950,
saw them finish above Monaco on goal difference. A 2-1 loss to their closest
challengers with 5 games to go didn't prove costly for Bordeaux. This was the
only time they failed to win in their last 6 matches, helped in no small part by 2 rare goals from Girard (his only
goals of that season) during the title run-in. Bordeaux retained their title
the following year, and also won a league and cup double in 1987. As Bordeaux
were celebrating their 1984 triumph, Girard's first club, Nimes, were
relegated, and he rejoined them in 1988 with them still in the 2nd tier. They
returned to the top-flight following promotion in 1991 - Girard's final season
as a player. He immediately went into management, starting out at Nimes. His
greatest achievement as a manager was leading Montpellier to a surprise Ligue
Un title in 2012. He's currently the boss of Ligue 2 side Paris FC. He won 7
caps for France, 5 of them at the 1982 World Cup. He scored his only
international goal in the 3rd place play-off, as Poland beat France 3-2.
