Paul Merson - 260.27 Performance Pts
Born: 20/03/1968 Harlesden, England
Position: Forward Height: 1.81m Weight: 84kg
Merson broke into the Arsenal first team in the late 80s under George Graham, when they began to challenge for trophies after several lean years. Success arrived in the form of 2 League titles, numerous cups, and international recognition, before a surprise move to Middlesbrough in 1997, who were then in the second tier. After helping Boro return instantly to the Premier League, he joined Aston Villa where he enjoyed four good seasons. He latterly played for Portsmouth and Walsall, becoming a fans' favourite at both clubs; he was also player-manager at Walsall for a while. Merson also battled numerous addictions (mainly drink and gambling) throughout his career. The image of him miming drinking pints in celebration after Arsenal's FA Cup semi-final win against Spurs in 1993 was perhaps an unfortunate prelude to his future problems. Since retirement he entered the world of punditry and is a regular panellist on Sky's 'Soccer Saturday'. He was a skilful, attacking player, capable of great passing and scoring spectacular goals.
