By the time Gabi moved to Qatari side Al Sadd in 2018, thus calling time on his long association with Atletico Madrid, he'd clocked up over 400 appearances for them over a 14-year period, which was interrupted by spells with Getafe (on loan) and Real Zaragoza. His time at Zaragoza was certainly eventful; relegation in 2008, promotion back to La Liga the following year, and a last day escape from relegation in 2011. His return to Atletico the same year led to a much more successful spell, and he was captain for much of the time. After a 5th place finish in his first season back, they finished in the top 3 for the following 6 seasons. This of course included skippering the side to La Liga success in 2014; Gabi was also captain when they reached the Champions League final in 2014 and 2016, losing to city rivals Real on both occasions. During Gabi's time they also reached 2 Europa League finals and were victorious both times - in 2012 (against fellow Spanish side, Athletic Bilbao) and 2018 (against Marseille, with Gabi scoring a rare goal, Atletico's 3rd, to seal the 3-0 victory). That was a decent way to sign off his career in Spain. He was never selected for the Spanish national side
