De Sanctis began his career with Pescara in Serie B; after featuring briefly for Juventus, he moved to Udinese in 1999. He took a while to establish himself, but became undisputed first choice keeper in 2002, and missed only a handful of games over the next 5 seasons. After brief spells with Sevilla and Galatasaray, he returned to Serie A with Napoli in 2009. He spent 4 years there, achieving a runner up finish in Serie A in 2013, his final year in Naples, before joining Roma. He repeated this feat with the Giallorossi for the next 2 seasons. Roma had an outstanding ability to finish in 2nd place in Serie A, having achieved this 9 times since the turn of the century. The continued consistent presence of Gianluigi Buffon meant his appearances at international level were limited, and he ended up with just 6 caps. He retired at the end of the 2016-17 season, after a solitary league appearance for Monaco in Ligue Un. He went on to hold managerial roles at Roma and Salernitana and is now sporting director at Parma
