Probably the most high-profile Egyptian sportsperson of all time, Salah is adored by Liverpool fans and admired by many fans around the world. An output of over 200 goals for the club, many of them world class, has cemented his status as an all-time Anfield great, even being immortalised in several fans’ songs. An uneventful spell at Chelsea gave little indication of Salah’s future success. Having joined the West Londoners in 2014, he made only a handful of appearances before being farmed out on loan, eventually ending up at Roma where his career started to take off. High-placed Serie A finishes, and Champions League appearances, increased his profile, leading to his 2017 move to Liverpool. 32 league goals in his debut season, securing the Golden Boot, gave a taste of things to come. At the end of that debut season, having reached the Champions League final, Salah suffered an injury, as a result of a foul (not the first of his career) from Sergio Ramos. He was powerless to prevent Liverpool from falling to a 3-1 defeat to Real Madrid. Redemption came 12 months later. For a player famous for scoring spectacular goals, it was a straightforward penalty kick from Salah that gave Liverpool an early lead in the 2019 final, with the Reds going on to beat Tottenham 2-0 to secure the Champions League trophy.
