Ozil was a mercurial talent who though at times was frustratingly inconsistent, on other occasions could be one of the best midfielders in the world, with fantastic passing ability. He achieved a lot in his career though. At international level, he contributed to Germany's 2014 World Cup victory with a series of outstanding performances throughout the tournament, including a goal in the round of 16 victory over Algeria. He announced his international retirement in 2018. Ozil is of Turkish heritage; he cited discrimination, and accusations of disloyalty to Germany, as his reasons. His club career began with his local side, Schalke, breaking into the first team aged 17, and the side from Gelsenkirchen were Bundesliga runners-up in his first season (2006-07). He joined Werder Bremen in 2008 and scored the winning goal to secure the German Cup in 2009 with a 1-0 final victory over Bayer Leverkusen. With his star on the rise, Ozil attracted the interest of Spanish giants Real Madrid, arriving in Spain in 2010. La Liga success was achieved in 2012, and this remained his only league championship success. Despite being Real's most regular assist-provider, he was allowed to move to Arsenal in 2013. Trophy success came in the form of 3 FA Cups, in 2014, 2015 and 2017, however in later years he fell out of favour. After Ozil’s Arsenal career fizzled out, he saw out his career with Fenerbahce and Istanbul Basakehir in Turkey, before retiring in 2023.
