Ulrich Borowka - 258.71 Performance Pts
Born: 19/05/1962 Menden, Germany
Position: Central Defender Height: 1.77m Weight: 74kg
By the
time Borowka made his debut with Borussia Monchengladbach in 1982, their powers
were on the wane, having last been crowned Bundesliga champions 5 years
earlier. They came mightily close to the title in 1984 however, finishing on
the same points as champions Stuttgart and runners-up Hamburg, being pushed
into 3rd place on goal difference. Further agony came that same season as they
lost the German Cup final on penalties to Bayern Munich, although Borowka
converted his kick. They also finished 3rd in 1987, which was Borowka's last
season there before joining Werder Bremen. Immediate success came his way,
winning the Bundesliga in his first season. His only goal of that campaign
sealed a crucial 1-0 win over relegation-threatened Waldhof Mannheim in April.
This was a glorious period for Bremen; by the time Borowka left, in December
1995, they'd secured another league title, in 1993, and appeared in 4 German
Cup finals, winning twice, in 1991 and 1994. The 1991 victory saw Borowka score
the winning penalty in the shoot-out against 1.FC Koln. They also achieved
success in Europe, capturing the 1992 Cup Winners' Cup. Borowka won 6
international caps, appearing in central defence in all 4 matches as West
Germany hosted the 1988 European Championships.
