Nigbur was
part of the West Germany squad that won the 1974 World Cup, but with Sepp Maier
established as first-choice keeper, didn't play in the tournament; he ended up
with 6 caps in total. At club level, Nigbur played for Schalke for most of his
career, making almost 400 Bundesliga appearances in 2 spells. 1972 was his most
successful year; a 2nd place league finish was followed by an emphatic 5-0
victory over Kaiserslautern to lift the German Cup. Ten years later, he was in
the 2nd tier with Schalke, following their relegation in 1981, but they made an
immediate return to the top level. Nigbur left Schalke the following year, in
1983, and saw out his career in the lower leagues. He had a mid-career
spell with Hertha Berlin, which included a 3rd place league finish in 1978.
