Borussia
Monchengladbach were one of the dominant forces in the Bundesliga in the 1970s,
and Bonhof was a key creative influence. He scored on his league debut in 1970,
and picked up 4 titles during the decade, including 3 in succession (1975 to
1977). It could have been 4 in a row but they finished runners up on goal
difference to 1.FC Koln in 1978. Although they famously missed out on the
European Cup in 1977, losing to Liverpool in the final, Monchengladbach
achieved success in Europe with their UEFA Cup triumph in 1975. Bonhof's move
to Valencia in the latter part of the decade was a great success; a Copa del
Rey triumph in 1979 was followed up with victory in the Cup Winners' Cup the
following year. Valencia beat Arsenal in the final on penalties, and,
unsurprisingly for a German, Bonhof converted his kick. After these 2
triumphant years in Spain, he then returned to the Bundesliga with Koln.
Although they pushed eventual champions Hamburg close in 1982, Bonhof couldn't
add to his tally of league titles. His club career ended in disappointment,
following relegation with Hertha Berlin in 1983 after an injury-hit season that
forced his retirement. He shone on the international stage, winning 53 caps in
total; he set up Gerd Muller's winning goal in the 1974 World Cup final, and
was a standout player as the Germans reached the 1976 European Championship
final. Bonhof returned to Borussia Monchengladbach as manager in 1998-99, but
they had a disastrous season, culminating in relegation in last place, with just
4 wins.
