Playing for Barcelona in the 70s wasn't the virtual guarantee of trophy success that it is today. Asensi spent the entire decade with the Catalan side, winning a solitary league title, in 1974. Similarly, playing for Spain during this era wasn't as likely to lead to success on the international stage, when compared to the post-2008 era; Asensi picked up 41 caps, but Spain didn't come close to winning any major honours during his international career. He started out at Elche before his 1970 move to Barca. As well as the 1974 league success, they also finished as runners-up 5 times during the decade. Barcelona also claimed the 1979 European Cup Winners' Cup, with a dramatic 4-3 extra-time victory over Fortuna Dusseldorf; Asensi captained the side and scored one of the goals. He spent the latter part of his career in the Mexican league and retired in 1983
