Eto'o played for Cameroon in his first World Cup at France 98, having won his first international cap in 1997, aged just 16. He went on to appear in 3 other World Cups, in 2002, 2010 and 2014; he retired from international football after the 2014 tournament, with a tally of 118 caps and 56 goals - both national records. At club level, he started out at Real Madrid, but barely featured in the first team. A loan spell with Mallorca in 2000, which became permanent, saw him establish himself as a noteworthy talent in Spain; he scored twice in the 3-0 victory over Recreativo de Huelva to seal the Copa del Rey in 2003. Barcelona came calling soon after, thus beginning a hugely successful 5-year spell at Camp Nou. La Liga title success came in his first season (2004-05), and Eto'o would win it twice more in his time with Barca, in 2006 and 2009. Champions League titles were also won in both years, with Eto'o playing a key role in both victories. A foul on Eto'o by Arsenal's Jens Lehmann in the 2006 final led to the 'keeper receiving a red card, and his opening goal in the 2009 final paved the way for the 2-0 victory over Manchester United. This secured a treble for Barca, and Eto'o repeated the feat the following season, having moved to Inter. The 2010 Champions League success was Inter's first since 1965. In 2011, Eto'o was tempted by the new found riches of Anzhi Makhachkala in the Russian league and spent 2 seasons there. He then came to the Premier League with Chelsea. After scoring against Tottenham in March 2014, he produced an 'old man' celebration, in response to derogatory comments about his age from his manager - the shy, reserved Jose Mourinho, who had also been his boss at Inter. Brief spells with Everton and Sampdoria followed, before seeing out his career with spells in Turkey and Qatar
