Simmet's career began around the same time that the Bundesliga started, making his debut for Borussia Neunkirchen in the competition's 2nd season, 1964-65. His early years weren't exactly a great success. Relegation with his first club in 1966 was followed by the same fate the following year with his new club, Rot-Weiss Essen. Happier times came his way following his move to 1.FC Koln. The German Cup was secured in his first season (1967-68), and they repeated this success with another cup victory in 1977. The following season, which was Simmet's 10th and final one with the club, saw Koln complete a league and cup double, although he missed out on playing in the cup final. With Borussia Monchengladbach breathing down their necks, a 5-0 win over relegation-bound St Pauli sealed the 1978 title for Koln on goal difference.
