Any Burnley fans who were lucky enough to witness both Bob
Kelly and Jimmy McIlroy play apparently say that there's little to choose
between them, and both are regarded as all-time greats. Kelly was part of the
Burnley side that won the league title in 1921. He also won 14 caps for
England, scoring twice against Scotland, including the winner, in a 5-4 win
(from 4-2 down) on his debut in 1920. He broke the transfer record when he
signed for Sunderland in 1925. He was clearly a proper northerner; he was born
in Lancashire, and he also played for Huddersfield, Preston and Carlisle. His
timing was slightly off - he signed for Huddersfield in 1927, the year after
they won their 3rd consecutive league title. Bizarrely he played for both
Huddersfield (who were runners-up) and Sunderland (who finished 3rd) during the
1926-27 season. He also saw active service during the First World War
