Bache was an inside-forward (in the days when that position
existed) for Aston Villa in the early years of the 20th century and was
considered one of the finest dribblers of his time. He was a league champion
with Aston Villa in 1910 (who had to wait 71 years before winning the title
again). Bache scored 185 goals in total for Villa between 1900 and 1914.
Although the First World War curtailed his career, he was fortunate not to lose
his best playing years to the conflict. He played briefly (for Grimsby in 1920)
after hostilities ended, having risen to the rank of Lance-Corporal whilst
serving his country.
