Roberto Lopez Ufarte was born in Fes, Morocco to Spanish parents who had migrated there for work. Lopez Ufarte was initially picked for the Spanish team in 1977 and continued until the 1982 World Cup hosted in Spain, scoring the host’s goal in their opening match, a disappointing 1-1 draw against Honduras. Nicknamed Diablillo (Little Devil), Lopez Ufarte started out in 1975, and was part of the Real Sociedad side that won back-to-back La Liga titles in 1981 and 1982, and he spent 12 seasons there. He then had a season with Atletico Madrid, before joining Real Betis in 1988. This proved to be his final season as a player, with injuries taking their toll. This was a disappointing career finale, accentuated by the fact that Betis were relegated that year.
