At club level, Di Maria has appeared for a number of
European giants, since arriving at Benfica in 2007 from his native Argentina.
He subsequently appeared for Real Madrid, Manchester United, Paris Saint
Germain and Juventus, which is an impressive CV. His spell at United was
somewhat underwhelming, with a sublime chipped goal in a 5-3 defeat to
Leicester being a rare moment of quality. Of similar quality was his goal in
the 2022 World Cup Final, which put Argentina 2-0 up against France. His winner’s
medal, following his nation’s penalty shootout victory, can be added to a host
of other major medals, including La Liga and Champions League titles with Real
Madrid, and five Ligue Un titles with PSG. His recent international retirement
leaves him in joint third place in the list of most caps for Argentina,
alongside Javier Zanetti, and just behind another Javier – Mascherano. Out in
