Jimmy Greaves - 257.31 Performance Pts
Born: 20/02/1940 East Ham, England Died: 19/09/2021 Danbury, England
Position: Forward Height: 1.73m Weight: 66kg
Greaves' career can be clearly divided into 2 distinct
halves. An illustrious playing career, with Chelsea, Spurs, West Ham and
England, and a media career as one half of the duo 'Saint and Greavsie', who
were a staple of Saturday mornings during the 80s and 90s. His 44 goals in 57
England appearances (including 6 hat tricks) are impressive; his tally of 357
top-flight goals is an all-time record in England and should be recognised more
widely (football didn’t begin in 1992 and all that!!). He scored on his league
debut as a 17-year-old for Chelsea and was famous for scoring on his debut for
all his clubs, and for England. After a brief spell with AC Milan, he signed
for Spurs in 1961, for £99,999 (to avoid the pressure of being the first
£100,000 player). Although he missed out on the Double that Spurs had won the
previous season, he had his best years at White Hart Lane, scoring 220 goals in
his time there. He missed out on a place in the starting line-up for the 1966
World Cup Final, which still rankles with him. He was renowned as being a
composed, clinical finisher. He played non-league football towards the end of
the 70s, which he credits as helping him overcome his alcoholism, before his
media career took off. He became a jovial, if at times cheesy presence on ITV's
screens, mainly for their football coverage but also as a TV reviewer on the
TV-am Breakfast Show.
