The high point of Joe Cole’s career possibly came when scoring a fabulous goal from distance in England's World Cup match with Sweden in 2006. Cole came through the much-lauded youth system at West Ham, and great things were expected of him from an early age. He made his first-team debut aged 17 in 1999 and also won the FA Youth Cup with The Hammers that year. A perfect storm of West Ham's relegation, and Chelsea's newfound wealth, meant that Cole moved to Stamford Bridge in 2003. These were his best years, both at club level (3 Premier League titles) and at international level, especially during the aforementioned 2006 World Cup. He joined Liverpool in 2010 but never felt at home there; a sending off on his league debut wasn't the best of starts. He felt more at ease during his loan spell at Lille, and even more so when he returned to West Ham in 2013. After brief spells with Aston Villa and Coventry, he moved to the United States to play for Tampa Bay Rowdies, before retiring in 2018.
