Nachtweih's most significant career move was from East to West, defecting from the German Democratic Republic in 1976 to begin a new life across the border. Having already appeared at international level, for East Germany's Under-21 side, this move meant he was unable to represent West Germany. He was able to forge a successful career at club level, however. His first taste of silverware came with Eintracht Frankfurt, with the 1980 UEFA Cup victory over fellow Germans Borussia Monchengladbach; he also lifted the German Cup the following year. Unsurprisingly, his 1982 move to Bayern Munich led to even more success. 4 Bundesliga titles were claimed during the 80s, including a league and cup double in 1986. The following year Bayern reached the European Cup Final, losing to Porto. He then dipped his toes in French waters in 1989, spending a couple of seasons with Cannes, before a brief return at Frankfurt. He spent his last few years as a professional with Waldhof Mannheim in the German 2nd tier.
