Torino have produced many great players, and achieved great things throughout their history, but sadly have been hit by tragedy more than once. Ferrini was one of their finest ever players and made over 500 appearances. His first main achievement was winning promotion back to Serie A in 1960; this was followed by Coppa Italia successes, in 1968 and 1971. The Scudetto finally came Torino's way in 1976 - their first since 1949, the year of the Superga tragedy. By this time, Ferrini was on the coaching staff, having finished playing the previous year. Later that year, tragedy struck; Ferrini suffered 2 brain aneurysms, and passed away in November 1976, aged just 37. He also left his mark on the international stage. In the infamous 'Battle of Santiago' at the 1962 World Cup, Ferrini was sent off after 8 minutes; he refused to leave the field and had to be escorted off by policemen, with Italy eventually losing 2-0 to Chile. He made a more positive contribution 6 years later, as Italy won the European Championships, although he was left out of the side that won the replay in the final 2-0 against Yugoslavia, having appeared in the drawn first match.
