July 1982, the World Cup Final. 81 minutes on the clock, and Altobelli, who had
come on as substitute for the injured Francesco Graziani, scores to put Italy
3-0 up against West Germany - victory assured. Fast-forward 4 years to 17
June 1986, and Italy's defence of the trophy is over, following their 2-0
defeat to France. Altobelli had scored in all 3 of Italy's group stage matches
in Mexico but was unable to prevent their exit in the round of 16. He ended up
with a career tally of 25 international goals, none more important than the one
in the 1982 final. Altobelli's club career began and ended in Serie B with
Brescia, but he was most closely associated with Inter, making over 300 Serie A
appearances. He made an immediate impact with the Nerazzurri, scoring in the
final against Napoli to help win the Coppa Italia in his first season. He did
the same 4 years later to secure the cup again, with Inter this time overcoming
Torino. Sandwiched in between was the 1980 Scudetto - Inter's first for 9 years
- with Altobelli contributing 15 goals in that title-winning campaign. He spent
one season (1988-89) with Juventus, before his Brescia return, retiring in
1990.
