Jack Charlton spent his entire career with Leeds United,
playing for over 20 years; his total of 762 appearances is a club record. They
were a mid-table Second Division side when he started out, and by the time he
retired in 1973 they were established as one of England's top sides. Part of
the England side that won the 1966 World Cup, alongside his brother, Bobby.
England manager Sir Alf Ramsey confessed to Jack Charlton that he didn't always
pick the best players, but he picked the best team, which implied that he was
aware of Charlton's limitations, but also his value. He is also famous for his
managerial career, firstly at club level, with Middlesbrough (winning promotion
in 1974), Sheffield Wednesday and Newcastle, then internationally with Ireland.
Irish fans will have great memories of qualifying for and starring at major
tournaments during this era - Euro 88, Italia 90 and USA 94 generated many
special moments. A straight talker, for example, when asked why he had banned
journalist Eamon Dunphy from his press conference, he simply said 'I don't like
him'. His Irish side were renowned for their direct but effective playing style
and outstanding team spirit. He also took full advantage of the FIFA rules
regarding ancestry to build a side featuring players with Irish heritage.
