Goalkeeper Frey only played for one season in his native France, suffering relegation with Cannes in 1997-98, his debut season as a professional. Whilst still a teenager, he moved to Inter in Serie A in 1998, thus beginning a 15-year stay in Italy, where he represented 5 clubs. He spent the longest stint at Fiorentina, joining them initially on loan at the start of 2005-06 and staying for 6 seasons. He spent a couple more years in Serie A with Genoa, then moved to Bursaspor in Turkey where he finished his career, retiring in 2015. He'd also represented Verona and Parma. He was signed by Parma in 2001 to replace the Juventus-bound Gianluigi Buffon; they lifted the Coppa Italia at the end of Frey's first season, thus giving him his only career trophy. Despite being a key presence in Serie A for many years, he only won 2 caps for France; he was an unused member of the France squad at Euro 2008. His grandfather and father were also both professional players.
