Francesco Toldo - 254.94 Performance Pts
Born: 02/12/1971 Padua, Italy
Position: Goalkeeper Height: 1.96m Weight: 90kg
Toldo was the unfortunate Italian keeper who had to pick the
ball out of the net when David Trezeguet scored the Golden Goal to secure the
Euro 2000 trophy for France. Toldo had played his part in Italy reaching the
final, especially by his performance in the semi-final against the Netherlands.
A penalty save in normal time was followed up by 2 more in the shoot-out
victory. Toldo started his career on the books of Milan, but never appeared in
the first team. After some loan spells in the lower divisions, Toldo signed
permanently with Fiorentina, winning promotion in his first season. Following 2
Coppa Italia successes (in 1996, and in his final season, 2001), Toldo moved on
to Inter as Fiorentina's financial troubles forced them to sell some key
players. Inter were becoming more of a force in Serie A at this time, and
usually finished in the upper reaches of the league standings. They went on to
win 5 successive Scudetti; the first of which, in 2005-06, was on the back of
the Calciopoli sanctions imposed on Juventus. Toldo wasn't first-choice during
this era, making only occasional appearances, and didn't make a single league
appearance during Inter's treble-winning season of 2009-10. This was his last
season as a player, and he was on the bench as Inter beat Bayern Munich to win
the Champions League.
