Born: 28/05/1974    Oldenburg, Germany

Position: Goalkeeper    Height: 1.91m    Weight: 91kg

A goalkeeper scoring a goal is an enjoyable, quirky moment in football. Sometimes it's also a vital, historic moment, as Carlisle fans who remember the Jimmy Glass winner to preserve their league status in 1999 will testify. Some keepers (Paraguayan Jose-Luis Chilavert springs to mind) found the net regularly during their careers. Butt is definitely in the latter category, having netted 32 times in his career, mainly from penalties. Having started out with his local side, Oldenburg, Butt moved to Hamburg in 1997 and soon established himself as first-choice. His profile increased following his move to Bayer Leverkusen, being part of the famous (infamous?) side that were runners-up in 3 competitions in 2002 - Butt's first full season with them. Yes, he had the dubious privilege of being beaten by Zinedine Zidane's memorable volley that clinched the Champions League for Real Madrid that year. After joining Bayern Munich in 2008, he won his one and only career league title with them in 2010, also reaching the Champions League final that year, losing to Inter. He won 4 caps for Germany - either Oliver Kahn or Jens Lehmann tended to be first choice as Number 1 at international level at this time. For comparison, Nicky Butt (an outfield player of course) ended his career with a goal tally of 30.
