Dieter Muller - 253.64 Performance Pts
Born: 01/04/1954 Offenbach, Germany
Position: Forward Height: 1.83m Weight: 77kg
Although
not as heralded as namesakes Gerd or Thomas, Dieter Muller still made an impact
on the international stage for West Germany. 1976 was his highlight. In the
European Championship semi-final that year, hosts Yugoslavia raced into a 2-0
lead, and were still 2-1 ahead when Muller came off the subs bench. He scored
the equaliser within moments of coming on, and completed his hat-trick in
extra-time, sealing a 4-2 victory for West Germany. Muller also scored in the
final as the Germans completed another comeback from 2-0 down against
Czechoslovakia, before losing on penalties - Panenka and all that. At club
level, Muller had his longest, most successful spell with 1.FC Koln; they had a
strong side in the 1970s and were Bundesliga champions in 1978. Like the other
Mullers, Dieter was a prolific scorer. He netted over 150 times in his 8
seasons with Koln, which included 6 in one game (a Bundesliga record) against
Werder Bremen during that title winning season. After a season with Stuttgart,
he moved to Bordeaux in 1982. 3 seasons in France yielded a runners-up spot,
then 2 successive Ligue Un titles (1984 and 1985). The following season wasn't
such a success for Muller, suffering relegation with Saarbrucken. It was probably
his fault, seeing as he only contributed 4 goals that season. In his heyday he
scored more than that in a single game. He saw out his career with Kickers
Offenbach, by this time in the 2nd tier; he'd started his career there before
making his name with Koln. His father had previously played for Kickers, so he
kept up the family link with the club.
