The list of players below shows the foreign players who made the most appearances in Serie A prior to the 1980-81 season.
The choice of this date isn't as arbitrary as it seems. Following the defeat of Italy to North Korea in the 1966 World Cup, the Italian Football Federation imposed a ban on clubs recruiting foreign footballers, a ban which was only lifted prior to the start of the 1980-81 football season.
Note that this list is based upon place of birth of the player in question. Some players eventually adopted Italian nationality (Jose Altafini for instance) or considered themselves Italian from birth anyway (Giuseppe Wilson)
