Bilbao's Basque-only policy does seem to inspire commitment and longevity, and
they have had a number of long-serving players throughout their history. Garay
wasn't a one-club man, but did spend 10 years with Bilbao before going on to
represent Barcelona and Malaga. His one career league title was with the
Basques, in 1956, and he also picked up 3 Spanish Cup winners medals during the
decade. Barcelona were reigning La Liga champions when Garay joined them in
1960, but they failed to lift the title during his 5-year spell there; he did
enjoy further Spanish Cup success, however, in 1963. He played 29 times for
Spain, including at the 1962 World Cup. He finished his playing career by
spending a season with Malaga, in 1965-66; this proved to be a disappointing
end, with them slipping out of the top division following defeat in a
relegation play-off.
