Karlheinz
Forster wasn't the only Karlheinz to play for West Germany in the 1982 World
Cup final; Karl-Heinz Rummenigge (complete with hyphen in his first name) was a
well-known team-mate. He also wasn't the only Forster, as brother Bernd
appeared alongside him in central defence. These 3 were also part of the German
squad that won the 1980 European Championships, although Bernd didn't appear in
the final. The Forster brothers formed a key partnership in central defence at
club level; they played together with Stuttgart for many years and contributed
to their Bundesliga title success in 1984. Karlheinz played over 300 times
there, before moving to Marseille in 1986, thus breaking up the sibling
partnership; Bernd retired the same year in any case. Karlheinz achieved
further success in France, winning Ligue Un in 1989 and 1990.
